West of Austin sits a part of the state where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. So many little tows in this area are surrounded by water, rolling green hills, and plenty of trees. Wimblerley is one of those Texas Hill Country Towns.
**also plenty of creepy crawly things, but we’ll get into that later!

I am due back for another visit, if anything… because I only spent 2 days there in 2015 and clearly my cell phone camera quality then was uh, not that great.
That was your warning that these photos will look like they were all taken with a beat up old camera.

This trip was pretty short. Mostly, it was meant to be a day of relaxing in an adorable little cabin in the woods for my boyfriend’s birthday.

Relax sign in Texas Hill Country Town of Wimberley

Wimberley has a population of about 3000 people. About halfway between Austin and San Antonio, it sits right along Cypress Creek.
You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere… but it’s less than an hours drive to the center of Austin. That makes it a great getaway for a day of exploring. You can see most of what the town has to offer in a day or so.

Downtown in this Texas Hill Country town is filled with places to get a drink, bite to eat, and lots of eclectic shops. Do you see those decorations above? I mean, who puts a car bumper in front of their store?! Neat!

The first order of business was finding dinner when we got to town. I picked Ino’z, because it was along the creek and had great views. Below you can see the walkway, carved trees, tables around the water edge.
(This place was also chosen because it was listed as “brew and chew” and we assumed it was a craft brewery. It was not. The outdoor area was worth it. The food, eh. I’d try somewhere else if I went back.)

Some trips go completely according to plan.
Others…
You end up spending too much time killing poisonous spiders in your bathroom.

Looking back, I did get exactly what I asked for. I rented a cabin off by itself in the woods with no one around. It had a gigantic front porch with rocking chairs, perfect for sipping your coffee. There was a pool table in the living room. A hot tub on the back deck.

There were also still Christmas lights all around the porch in March, the pool table was so close to the walls (there was no room for it) that it was impossible to play on 2 sides, and there were brown recluse spiders everywhere. yeah, EVERYWHERE. Before we even unzipped our bags, we had already killed around a dozen of them in the bathroom. Of course, no one answered the phone when I called the reservation company because it was a weekend… so we were on our own. I’m clearly someone who is very cool with a lot of more ‘run down’ type adventures… but ack. dudes. spray in your cabins for spiders!

Cute Cabin you can rent in Wimberley, Texas

Most people choose to visit Wimberley in the summer. It’s the PERFECT place to find 74382094329 different amazing swimming holes.
I was there in the spring. No swimming when it’s still jeans and tshirt weather!

Visiting places like this Texas Hill Country town out-of-season is spectacular. You get to avoid the crowds, and really enjoy it from a different perspective.

BLUE HOLE:
When the weather is right, the Blue Hole is the perfect place to swim. You’ll see people on rope swings, in kayaks, and doing laps.
With it being too cold, no one was in the water. It was so still, there was a mirror effect across the creek. It was absolutely beautiful to sit and stare at for a bit.

The Blue Hole park is over 100 acres. In addition to swimming they have basketball courts, play areas, plenty of places to set up and picnic, and 4 miles of walking trails.

Someplace in this town, there was a little outdoor area with sculptures. I can’t figure out where is was, or what it was. As I scroll through my photos, I don’t see a single one of anything that could have been there.

Just this sign.

I liked this sign so much that I took a photo of it… and not the thing you weren’t supposed to touch.
Ooops. hahaha.
In my defense, that’s an amazing sign. If you know where this was, let me know, eh?

Art seemed to be everywhere!
Overflowing from the shops. Hanging out around the streets.
Carved into trees and stumps.

This lovely was carved into a tree stump along the creek.

The one big thing everyone travels to Wimberley for is Jacobs Well.

Jacob’s Well:

A spring? A cave? A swimming hole?
All of the above!

In the summer months, this (very) small hole is packed for swimming. Like the Blue Hole, there is a reservation system and admission fee. The water is shallow along the edges, leaving your ‘swimming’ experience to be more of a cliff diving. Take a climb up the trail to the top, then plug your nose and jump!
… something inside me (the part that is terrified of deep water) tells me that jumping from a tall rock and hoping nothing goes wrong on the way down and you land in the center of that little pool… well… yeah. It’s popular though!

Outside of the whole terrifying cliff jumping thing, this is a nice little place to stop for an hour and stroll around.
Jacob’s Well is a fully emerged cave. The second biggest in Texas. Not much hiking around there, besides the trail to get to and from (it’s a short walk from the parking lot).

Most of this trip was spent in Spider Cabin.

Other things to do in the Texas Hill Country town of Wimberley

Other things to do in Wimberley:
-Prayer Mountain. A set of long steps with inspirational phrases on them leading up to the top of a hill with a view.
-Count the boots. Many towns have a theme running through them. Wimberley has boots. 30 of them. Big decorated cowboy boots.
-ZIPLINING! I need to go back and do this. I loooove ziplining!
-Wineries. There are plenty of wineries around. You can’t go wrong if you shut your eyes, spin in a circle, and pick one off the map.

Hey! I'm Katrina.

I love the outdoors, exploring new places, and I'm constantly trying to learn how to grow and improve myself. I'm also anxiety filled when things don't go as planned, and really have no idea what I'm doing with myself on any given day.
